Best Things to do in Rhyl with Kids

25 July 2024

Those long school holidays are once again upon us and finding new and exciting things to do with your children can be quite a challenge.

Luckily, Tan Rallt Holiday Park is located close to some of the best family seaside towns in the country. Perhaps the most famous of these is of course the nearby town of Rhyl which has remains to this day a treasure trove of fun family attractions with everything from water parks and amusement arcades, to gorgeous sandy beaches which are ideal for building sand castles.

To help you keep your offspring entertained during the holiday period, we thought we’d put together a list of what the experts at Marine Holiday Park consider to be the top 5 best things to do in Rhyl with kids of all ages. Without further ado, here is number one…

1. Seaside Day Out
You can’t enter a discussion about things to do with kids in Rhyl without referencing its famous beach. Ultimately, it had to be at number one with the main beach stretching out for two miles across the gorgeous North Wales coast.

This is the quintessential beach you would imagine when asked to picture a seaside town, with soft sands which are ripe for building sandcastles. There is also a lifeguard presence, providing you with a little peace of mind in case you decide to go for a paddle or even a swim in the choppy waters.

There are also plenty of facilities nearby made up of bars, cafes and plenty of food outlets including a number of fabulous fish and chip shops.

2. Make a Splash in SC2
Any adults who enjoyed holidays in Rhyl in their youth will no doubt remember the legendary Sun Centre which was home to Rhyl’s brilliant waterpark.

Well, the Sun Centre is no more, but in its place comes the SC2 - a new and improved version of this 90s classic. It retains that fun filled waterpark, but adds to it with an outdoor waterpark section, thrilling ninja assault course and indoor adventure play area for smaller children.

The SC2 is the perfect all weather attraction and even the adults are catered for by the excellent on-site café. That is, unless you fancy taking on the waves yourself?

3. Head to the Arcades
It wouldn’t be a traditional British seaside destination if it didn’t have some traditional arcades. Thankfully, the arcades in Rhyl are every bit as good today as they were in the 1990s with a plethora of fun video games to play in addition to your usual fruit machines, slot machines and plenty of grab machines too filled with those highly sought after cuddly toys.

However, there have been plenty of additions since the 1990s with the Rhyl arcades now also being home to an indoor crazy golf course, laser quest battle zone and indoor soft play area for the smaller children.

One thing which is certain is that your kids will be kept amused for hours on end here. Just remember to bring lots of coins!

4. Go Crabbing
At a time of ever increasing living costs, cheap activities such as crabbing are becoming increasingly popular and there is no better place to do this than at Rhyl’s Marine Lake.

This man made reservoir is filled with these little creatures and crabbing is a great way to introduce your little ones to the joys of fishing. All you need to bring with you is a bucket, net, crabbing line and bait.

When it comes to your choice of bait, the general rule of thumb is that the smellier the bait is the better. Sardines are a popular choice, but you can always make use of any out of date meat or even fish heads. If you aren’t sure yourself about what is required in order to be a successful crabber, then we’d highly recommend reading this easy to follow guide before you take your children.

5. Ride the Miniature Railway
Marine Lake is a great destination to head to if you are looking for things to do with kids in Rhyl because it is about far more than just the reservoir at its centre. There is also a fun outdoor children’s play area here and, best of all, a miniature railway which runs around the circumference of the reservoir.

Based on a traditional steam locomotive, this provides children with a little insight into trains of yesteryear and is therefore sure to thrill any rail enthusiasts in your family, even the adult ones! In fact, this is officially Britain’s oldest miniature railway having been in operation since 1911 with the current steam trains that are in use having been built in Rhyl way back in the 1920s.
